Aims

With implementation of the EU (EURO) Machinery Directive, which obliges manufacturers to translate product documentation, BEUMER decided to change its traditional translation process in favor of modern computer aided translation workflow to handle the increased translation volume, while at the same time keeping costs down, maintaining quality and reducing the time-to-market cycle.

Implementation

To achieve these goals BEUMER chose TRADOS' translation memory system. At the beginning of 1996 Translator ’s Workbench and MultiTerm were installed for the six in-house translators responsible for English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Dutch, Greek, Danish, Hungarian, Polish and Russian are translated externally, the translator team at BEUMER still has to deal with almost 500,000 lines of installation and operating manuals, product specifications, contracts and correspondence in Interleaf 6.1 format (Unix platform) and Word 7.0 (Windows NT). Since these texts include some sentences which are similar, they can be "recycled" with the help of Translator ‘s Workbench.

Unnecessary duplications eliminated, and translation capacity is released for new projects.
